Like Chabon, Gay uses this reading to express self expression. Chabon had talked about how his message to the readers was to be comfortable and confident with yourself. Roxane Gay in ,” Bad Feminist,” talks about this tension that she constantly feels. That tension is that there is this idea that “there is only a right way to be a woman, a right way to be the most essential woman-is ongoing and pervasive.” Along with this quote, Gay speaks on about how there is tension socially; we have to be thin, wear makeup and certain types of clothes to be beautiful. But, that’s not at all what has to happen. These conditions do make self expression difficult. We have to worry about not being beautiful enough because of how we look. As Chabon applies, we need to tell ourselves that what we believe is the truth about our lives. We need to find what we think is beautiful woman and be it. Not what society says.
