In Adichie’s ted talk “The Danger of a Single Story”, she talks about her life story of growing up in Nigeria and how she felt there was nothing of her kind in African literature. She was always reading European and American stories. he would take the ideas of what she read and incorporate them into the stories she was writing. Her characters in her stories are what looked like the white and blue eyed. When she started to learn what African literature was, she started to write about those in her stories. When she went to America and college, she was being questioned about herself and what I was like where she’s from. Adichie was stunned that they were questioning her because they never seen her before and was confused on her appearance. From her book, people assumed that all Nigerians were like that character. They don’t know the whole scenery and the people. Now, Adichie herself did judge someone before. When her family was taking in a small boy, she just assumed he was poor and only poor. That was until she met the family and saw that the family was nothing but poor, but creative. People should not see them as one thing and only that one thing, but to look at the bigger picture and see what more they are. No one should be ” judged, criticized, and compared to others” for being who they are.
