Revision Reflection
For my final project, I decided to go ahead and revise my second short story. The first revision I made was to give it a title, “Girl with the Blue Eyes.” I gave my story this title because the story is centered around a guy named Jay who meets a girl named Jennifer who he soon realizes he is falling in love with. Jay immediately becomes captivated by Jennifer’s blue eyes that he continues to mention throughout the story.
The second revision was just something small that I decided to change. During the club scene, when Jay and Jennifer are playing 20 questions, Jenneifer says that her favorite color is black. I decided to change it to being gray. It still works within the story and that scene specifically. As well as changing Jay’s favorite color from blue to red. I wanted to change it because the color gray works better than black does for my artist book, and red works better because I didn’t want my story to be overwhelmed with the color blue, as Jennifer’s eyes are blue and are the main attraction of the story. So, I wanted to add some contrast so I changed Jay’s color to red, as it still works as a stereotypical guy’s color. Also, doing the game, he finds out that she’s from Wisconsin. I didn’t mention where the story is taking place, so during Jay’s recap of what he learned about Jennifer, I mentioned that she moved from Wisconsin to Michigan for her teaching job. That way the readers get a sense of where the story takes place.
Thirdly, the last revision I made was a pretty big one. After my conference with Jesse, we talked about adding a bit of a time skip and adding some tension between Jay and Jennifer. I incorporated two time skips, both three years later, but a couple months apart from each other. The first part was them having some sort of tension rising between them. That was of Jay not coming home from work until late at night and Jennifer getting tired of staying up and waiting for him, so that causes some lack of communication between the two. The second part happened a couple months later after they worked their issues out. Everything between them was going great. Their three year anniversary was coming up and Jay wanted to surprise Jennifer by proposing to her, meanwhile Jennifer had a surprise of her own by telling Jay that she was pregnant.
Overall, I really enjoyed writing this story. Although it was a rough start at getting it started and not knowing where I was heading with it, I enjoyed how it evolved throughout my writing process and how it ended.
